5 Ideas For The Interested This Week

“There really is no such thing as a failed experiment.” — Adam Savage

I’m a bit obsessed about how audiences grow.

One of my beliefs is that meaningful audience growth comes as a result of one-to-one interactions as opposed to the one-to-many tactics most people focus on.

So, I was wondering if you’d help me with an experiment?

If you enjoy For The Interested, will you please tell ONE person you think will enjoy it about it and suggest they subscribe to it this week?

They can subscribe for free here.

I appreciate it and will let you know the results of this little experiment next week.

Thanks!

Now, on to this week’s ideas…

1. MY SIX FAVORITE QUESTIONS TO ASK A JOB CANDIDATE

“The key to hiring talent is to ask questions that reveal a candidate’s true intent, approach, and skill set.”

Hiring good people is hard, but it’s practically impossible if you don’t ask good questions when you interview candidates.

In this post I share my six favorite questions to ask a job candidate including what other jobs are you applying for, what was a typical day like in your previous job, and who do you follow that I should follow?

2. MAKE YOUR WRITING MORE POWERFUL WITH THIS MILITARY TECHNIQUE

“The basic idea is simple: put the most important details first. Don’t tease or delay your main point because people are busy and their time is valuable.”

If anyone knows the importance of clear communication it’s the military.

Jan-Erik Asplund explains how a military technique can make your writing more powerful and shows how to adapt the BLUF (bottom line up front) method to improve your reports, emails and communication in general.

3. HOW TO STOP GIVING A F*CK

“One of the biggest sources of discontent is that we care too much what other people think.”

This 11-minute video might help you worry a little less about what other people think, but even if it doesn’t you’ll at least get a laugh or two out of it.

Matt D’Avella spends a day with Jason Zook learning how to stop giving a f*ck and explores the reasons why we obsess over what others — including people we don’t even know — think about everything we do.

4. 10 MYTHS ABOUT THE MIND

“Early interactions with parents do not critically determine how people relate to others when grown.”

It turns out a lot of the conventional wisdom about how our brains and psychology work may not be accurate.

Matt Huston debunks 10 myths about the mind including that personality is shaped by birth order, people have different learning styles, and everybody goes through the same stages of grief.

5. EIGHT RESTAURANT MENU TRICKS

“On menus, perspective is everything. One trick is to include an incredibly expensive item near the top of the menu, which makes everything else seem reasonably priced.”

You’ll never look at another restaurant menu the same way after you read this one.

Jessica Hullinger breaks down eight restaurant menu tricks including how they manipulate prices, use colors to motivate behavior, and make you feel nostalgic.
