5 Ideas For The Interested This Week

This week can be a fresh start.

Or, this afternoon can be a fresh start.

Or, this moment can be a fresh start.

The great thing about a fresh start is it begins whenever you want it to.

Now, on to this week’s ideas…

1. You Can Be A Successful Creator (If You Develop These 11 Traits)

“Creators understand failure isn’t an option — it’s a prerequisite to success.”

It’s not enough to be talented.

In this post I break down how to develop the 11 traits you need to be a successful creator including to become a self-starter, a scientist, and an original.

2. How To Write With Clarity

“Can I say with certainty that I have found my focus — the one key piece of knowledge I want to impart?”

Great writing is clear writing.

Roy Peter Clark shares 20 questions to achieve clarity in your writing and while the article is aimed at journalists, these questions will improve anything you write.

They include questions like, “How would I explain this to a smart person that I know — who is NOT an expert?” and “Can I explain something by focusing on the experience of one human being?”

3. You Are Not Late

“Today truly is a wide open frontier. It is the best time EVER in human history to begin.”

This was originally published in 2014, but it might be even more true today.

Kevin Kelly explains why you are not late and suggests there’s never been a better time to use the internet to start, create, or build something.

As he points out, “In terms of the internet, nothing has happened yet. The internet is still at the beginning of its beginning.”

4. The LinkedIn Audience Growth Playbook

“The backbone of this approach is getting your audience to engage your LinkedIn posts. This distributes your content outside of your existing audience.”

If you have any interest in LinkedIn, this is a must-read.

Julian Shapiro and Nick Costelloe have compiled a playbook that breaks down how to build an audience and acquire customers on LinkedIn based on conversations with LinkedIn employees about how the platform’s algorithm actually works (use password “tokyo” to access it).

It includes tips about what to post, how to optimize your profile, how to generate leads, and more.

5. Seven Ways To Use Psychology To Get More Newsletter Subscribers

“If you want to persuade your subscribers to refer a friend, you first have to give them something that’s valuable enough to make them feel obliged to return the favor.”

No matter who your target audience is, there are universal principles of human nature you can leverage to get more people to subscribe and spread the word about your newsletter.

Andreea Macoveiciuc shares seven ways to use psychology to get more newsletter subscribers with specific examples of how successful newsletters (including mine!) use principles like reciprocity, social proof, and loss aversion to grow their audience.

My Final Words Of The Week

When he first became successful, Matthew McConaughey freaked out.

He went to a monastery to regroup and went on a four-hour walk with a monk and spilled his guts about his fears, worries, guilt, and more.

The monk said nothing.

After hours of walking and listening to McConaughey share all his insecurities and the stresses of his life up to that point, the monk finally spoke his first words:

“Me too,” he said.

And just like that, McConaughey realized he wasn’t alone.

Neither are you.

Have a great week.
