10 Ideas For The Interested This Week

“We are afraid to care too much, for fear that the other person does not care at all.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Picture this.

It’s January 11th and you just finished your 10th straight day of doing something you wanted to do when the year began.

You’re better at it. You’ve learned from it. You’re proud of it.

How would that feel? And how might it influence the rest of your year? The rest of your life?

Amazing things can happen with 10 days of effort and even more incredible things are possible in 30 days.

I hope you’ll join me for 30 Days of Doin’ It to see for yourself.

Registration closes and the program kicks off on January 2nd, so you’ve only got a couple more days to sign up.

If you have any questions about how it works, email me and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Now, on to this week’s ideas…

1. 10 IDEAS TO HELP YOU ACCOMPLISH A GOAL NEXT YEAR

“There’s an opportunity cost to everything worthwhile in life. No matter what you’re trying to accomplish, you’ll have to give up something in order to make it happen.”

As you think about your goals for the coming year, I put together this compilation post to give you the inspiration, motivation, and tips you need to make it happen.

These 10 ideas to help you accomplish a goal feature the best ideas I’ve shared in this newsletter over the past year about how to get things done including advice on how to get over procrastination, how to form a new habit, and how to get 1% better every day.

2. WHAT NOT TO DO ON SOCIAL MEDIA

“Make your social media posts about how you can help and add value rather than putting your name on everything and trying to sound important.”

When it comes to social media, there are no “rules.” But there certainly are things you should avoid doing if you hope to get value from the effort you put into these platforms.

Tim Denning shares nine things not to do on social media including to focus too much on self-promotion, only reshare other people’s content, and post the same content on every platform.

3. HOW TO CREATE A PROACTIVE DASHBOARD FOR YOUR BUSINESS

“A proactive dashboard is all the things you can control.”

This video will take you less than five minutes to watch and might work wonders for your business (btw, it can also help you with any non-business goal you have).

noah kagan breaks down how to create a proactive dashboard for you business, which is essentially a simple way to align and track your efforts toward whatever your goals are.

4. THINGS HEALTHY COUPLES DON’T FIGHT ABOUT

“Healthy people also don’t look to their partner to make them feel happy. Or beautiful. Or secure. Or confident. These emotions are first ours to manage.”

Healthy relationships are formed by people who are emotionally healthy individuals — as a result, there are certain things they don’t fight about.

Kris Gage shares 10 things healthy couples don’t fight about including how much time they spend together, anything around the house, and money.

She also points out when healthy couples do “discuss” things, they don’t think in terms of winners and losers.

5. HOW TO GO FROM ZERO TO 14K FOLLOWERS ON MEDIUM

“I was celebrating 30 views while others were kicking rocks because of it. Because I knew how hard it was to get 30 eyeballs. Medium makes it easy, and now everybody takes it for granted.”

As a guy who loves writing on Medium (follow me here) and who’s managed to attract 26,000 followers on the platform (shoutout to you guys!), this post resonated with me.

Tom Kuegler explains how he went from zero to 14,000 followers on Medium with a combination of patience, effort, confidence, and a big picture mindset.

As far as the secret to my own success on the platform, here’s a post I wrote a year ago about how I got my first 100,000 views on Medium.

6. MILLENNIALS FACE THE SCARIEST FINANCIAL FUTURE SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION

“Every stereotype of our generation applies only to the tiniest, richest, whitest sliver of young people. And the circumstances we live in are more dire than most people realize.”

I’m sharing this post for two reasons: First, it’s a fascinating look at the world Millennials are inheriting and how we got here.

But I’m also sharing it because it’s one of the best examples of interactive journalism I’ve come across this year. HuffPo has created a unique storytelling experience — one worth checking out even if you’re not super interested in the topic.

7. HOW TO TREAT YOURSELF WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY

“Shutting off the ‘shoulds’ for a few hours or a day can be a magical thing.”

’Tis the season to reward yourself and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to do it.

Lifehacker compiled suggestions from readers about how to treat yourself without spending money or eating junk and the resulting list is likely to inspire you to do something nice for yourself.

Suggestions include to set aside time to read, force yourself to have a lazy day, find a social situation that doesn’t require any work, and more.

8. LIVING IN THE AGE OF OUTRAGE

“Most people believe that people are becoming more polarized. According to the data, this is actually not true. People’s political beliefs are not that different than they were a few decades ago. What is changing, the data indicates, is how we deal with the viewpoints that make us uncomfortable.”

The reason everybody seems so mad these days is because they are — but not for the reasons you think.

Mark Manson examines what it’s like to live in the age of outrage and points out people on all sides of every argument have become addicted to outrage because we actually enjoy the anger.

9. PRICE THE CLIENT, NOT THE JOB

“It’s a rule in pricing — you never give one option. Enable their brain to answer the question it is wired to answer.”

This video comes from the 2016 Inbound conference, but it’s every bit as relevant today if you work with clients and/or have to set the price for something you sell.

Blair Enns explains why it’s important to price the client and not the job, and breaks down the art and science of selling products and services to people or companies.

10. THE ULTIMATE SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDE FOR ACTORS

“What you post is going to be dictated by your career goals. The act of posting on social media is essentially a small, individual step to reach the overarching and mini goals you defined initially.”

Hollywood talent manager Brian Medavoy put together a great resource that will help you even if your goal isn’t to become the next Tom Hanks or Jennifer Lawrence.

His Social Media Guide For Actors is a crash course in everything you need to know to step up your social media game — ranging from why it’s important, to how to build a following, to what to post on which platforms.
